Be sure to check out this secret little nook in Madison That Simply Works!
Isake Lockett is a licensed paramedical esthetician specializing in esthetic
and corrective procedures. Years of working with cosmetic dermatologists inspired
Isake to create Surface, bringing her expertise and exclusive line of cosmeceutical
products directly to the public.
She combines her clinical background with an eclectic blend of holistic therapies
ranging from Clinical Aromatherapy to Acupressure and Ayurveda. This unique
blend of cosmetic and medical skin care techniques works wonders for facial
and body skin affected by acne, aging, discoloration and scars or just in
need of some high tech pampering. "Esthetics seemed an unlikely choice
to the people who know me " Isake chuckles. "Im very rational
and inquisitive. I absolutely must know the how and whys of things. I was
a liberal arts major but spent alot of time in chemistry and bio classes.
I absolutely love the art and science of transformation" she explains.
"I got pulled along this path I had acne as a teen that no one
would touch for fear of scarring and sensitivities.
My only option- antibiotics- didnt work. So I decided to treat myself
with a holistic diet, home made potions and at home facials. When I learned
you could do skin care professionally- well, I used my college tuition to
go to esthetics school and the rest is history as they say. The minuteI was
licensed I went to work at some of Los Angeles most exclusive salons and continued
taking whatever post grad classes I could find on advanced esthetics- manual
techniques, lymphatic drainage, and traditional European & Middle Eastern
techniques. I was extremely fortunate to start off with a very diverse clientele
from the palest Norwegians to golden Asians and Brazilians to the bluest Africans-
this forced me to learn in depth about racial characteristics, skin physiology
and reactions to ingredients. Clients came to appreciate that they were in
good hands with me and I came to understand that healthy skin is not only
a beautiful asset in all languages but a very competitive advantage."
"I was especially fascinated by the Swedish and Japanese approaches to
beauty care as a matter of health and hygiene and this only increased my dissatisfaction
with the typical pamper parlor mentality of American salons at the time. I
quickly found myself working in a dermatologist office doing therapeutic facials
for acne, pre/post op care and anti- aging treatments. Our clientele included
people in the media, business, sports and entertainment worlds with unique
needs. Like immediate recovery from aggressive dermatologic treatments or
emergency help for "accidental" sunburns and horrid breakouts right
before a shoot!! I found a cosmetic lab willing to do small runs and I was
able to formulate products with some of the most effective ingredients like
kojic acid, PBN and egfs that fit the bill for clients. My aim was and still
is to protect the skins barrier and restore its integrity so it can withstand
environmental assault. So I guess you could say I became a clinical facialist
out of necessity and a formulator out of desperation!""After 3 exhaustive
years I needed time out to perfect, reflect and round out the line.
I moved from rowdy Los Angeles to tranquil Madison WI to complete an Ayurvedic
medicine program and continue doing research. I also opened a skin care studio
which I named Surface, a bit of an ironic twist on the word considering how
important skin is to our wellbeing. I spent the rest of my time writing skin
care articles, collaborating with other formulators, researchers and manufacturers
and rethinking both conventional skincare and AMA guidelines. I ended up reformulating
several items, dropping several others and expanding the line into a complete
facial and body care system. Its been amazingly fun, frustrating and
challenging and very well worth the education its taken!"
"Today I have to admit my approach is a bit radical. For one I m
not into soap, moisturizers, sun avoidance or a million products in the cabinet.
I rely heavily on Old World practicality enhanced with new technology and
respect for skins physiology.
The line is simple as skin care should be. The ideas are tested and backed
by independent laboratory research and over 8 years of use clinically. The
facial treatments have been perfected to a high art and utilize the best of
electrical and manual techniques. Body treatments are based on the work of
the English cellulite researcher, Dr Dancy and the Dr Vodder methodology.
Phytotherapy and holistic modalities from around the Globe are so well integrated
that clients notice results, not new age
mumbo jumbo.
My trademark? That I recognize healthy skin is a clear advantage.
Its my job to help clients achieve and maintain it. And I love it!"

TECHNOLOGY
Were excited about IPL, the newest treatment offered at Surface and
one of the hottest cosmetic
treatments in years! It is non ablative skin rejuvenation and is also called
photo rejuvenation, Fotofacial or light therapy. IPL is an effective treatment
for redness and flushing of the skin and will rejuvenate the look and feel
of skin by reducing fine wrinkles, pore size, roughness and fade age spots.
Check out Clinical Programs for package details !
What facial concerns does IPL treat?
redness and flushing enlarged pores rosacea irregular
pigmentation, age spots, freckling sun damage
small facial veins abnormal pigmentation (melasma and hyperpigmentation)
roughness and fine wrinkles
Why is IPL so exciting?
IPL machines deliver a broad band of pulsed light instead of one specific
band of light like medical lasers. They use light in a similar manner as lasers
but in a much milder, diffuse way. They are an excellent alternative to laser
surgery, chemical peels and it has no downtime! Following a treatment, most
clients can go back to their usual activities and can immediately apply make-up.
IPL is a safe, non-invasive solution that can be customized to your individual
needs and will provide cosmetic results with a high level of satisfaction.
After only the first treatment, skin feels smoother and appears more even
toned.
What is an IPL treatment like?
Each IPL treatment takes about 30-45 minutes and clients tolerate it very
well. Before treatment, a cold gel is applied to the area
treated, and you may be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright
light. During the treatment, you will hear a beep
each time the machine is used. Afterwards, for a few minutes or hours, the
skin may be flushed and appear irritated. Brown spots
will actually be slightly darker at first. These initial effects usually fade
in within hours, but can occasionally last for a few days.
What are the expected results?
Following IPL there is a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and
acne-like breakouts. Treated skin will become smoother
with a reduction in fine wrinkles and pore size as well as a fading of sun
spots or uneven pigmentation. In time, the results are
smoother, healthier, younger-appearing skin.
Is it safe?
IPL is non-invasive and very safe. You can usually return directly to work
and apply makeup immediately. You can resume all your activities (except sun
exposure) immediately. Very rarely, temporary mild bruising or blistering
may occur in the treated areas, which will resolve in a few days.
Am I a candidate?
If your appearance is marred by facial redness or signs of aging, or if you
would like to maintain a youthful, healthy appearance then IPL is for you.
Contact our office for a consultation to see if we can help you with this
new technology!
FYI for new clients
Am I going to breakout after my facial????
Not if we can help it! Any Surface facial that includes extracting uses a
pre-treatment disinfecting
cream to drastically reduce the possibility of breakouts. For extra protection,
ozone and galvanic
electrical currents can be added at the end.
Should I tip? What's normal?
Leaving gratuities for work well done seems to be the norm, but of course,
is optional. Most tips
range from 15%-20% of the price of the service provided. Isake loves 300%
tips but dont feel pressured!
Can I put on make-up after a facial?
Make-up shouldn't cause any post-facial clogging, unless you've had an IPL
or chemical peel.
However you should keep your skin bare at least 2 hours afterwards. Also after
an OxygenLift facial you
should not smoke for 6 hours!
What do I do with my contact lenses?
We have a general purpose Saline Solution available in the bathroom cabinet
if you would like to remove your contact lenses pre-treatment. However you
must bring your own containers! Please make sure to remove your contact lenses
before ANY treatment that involves chemical peeling or eyelash tinting.
Should I wear underwear during body
treatments?
If you are a girl, you will be provided with disposable undie's and draped
with sheets or towels all the time. You can wear a bathing suit if you're
shy but wed prefer not! If youre a boy you must wear your own
boxer shorts and you will be draped with sheets or towels at all times. You
also have the option of wearing one of the robes provided for you.
What do I wear during facial treatments?
Both boys and girls must remove their tops only and change into a smock that
will be provided. This protects your clothing from any products and allows
Isake to get to your shoulders and neck with ease. However if you are receiving
an IPL or peel, you do not have to change and will be simply be draped with
a towel.
Do I have to chat during my treatment?
Not for a second. Isake is a skin care therapist, not a speech therapist.
If you feel like chatting, go ahead. If you don't, let her know and she will
not be offended!
How do I find out about promotional deals or specials going on????
From time to time we do signature services that are not on the menu- like
our delicious Pumpkin Enzyme Halloween Facial and the very famous Pink Champagne
& Wine Facial. We like to have fun every once in a while with all this
clinical stuff! We also occasionally discount overstock. All specials are
advertised at the shop or on the website only- we do not do mailers! You can
be a Shop addict, keep your ear to the ground or just sign up for e/mail notification
to keep up with whats Up at Surface.

Professional Acid Peels
Using acids as part of a professional regimen can soften and smooth facial
lines and wrinkles, lighten "age spots" and freckles while reducing
the signs of aging. They can dramatically reduce breakouts and help repair
acne scarring.
The acids that do this are lactic, salicylic (a.k.a. BHA), and glycolic (a.k.a.
AHA). Think of acids as stripping off the skins surface- each produces a certain
amount of controlled damage with varying recovery times. The choice of acid
depends on what you are trying to achieve and is determined during a consultation.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT PEELS
1. How do acids work? All acids
gently dissolve a glue like substance in the skin allowing dead cells to slough
off more effectively. Due to this sloughing the skin begins to produce not
only fresh new skin cells but other skin stuff: i.e. healthy collagen and
stronger elastin fibers. This process happens gradually with repeated peels.
2. What are these acids made from and are they
safe? Salicylic acid is a derivative of aspirin, a natural
compound produced from the bark of the white willow tree. It exfoliates both
the surface and inside the pores making it an excellent choice for acne. Glycolic
acid comes from sugar cane and gives the most consistent results. Lactic acid
is
produced from sour milk and has water-binding properties, which makes it particularly
well suited for dry and dehydrated skin. Current research has reported no
long-term negative side effects, however those with allergies to
aspirin must not use salicylic acids.
3. Will I need special products?
Before any professional peeling, your skin will need to be acclimated to acids.
You can do this by using the appropriate Surface Home Care Kit. They contain
low dose, acid based cleansers, toners and moisturizers that you use for one
to four weeks before your first peel. This preps the skin for professional
strength
versions, and helps give better cosmetic results. Additionally, Kits contain
Recovery; a serum that helps injured skin repair itself in a smooth fashion
and is used post peel. The active ingredient is copper peptides at a strength
that is used clinically to treat grafted burn patients. Sunscreen with a minimum
20 SPF is mandatory and is also included in
each Kit.
4. What will I look like after a professional
peel? This can be hard to predict and depends on your skin
tone, tolerance and how long you use the preparatory homecare. Generally,
with 10-20% glycolic or lactic acid the skin looks slightly pink/reddish for
only a few hours and may feel slightly warm. Higher percentages might produce
a light flaking of the skin approximately five days post peel. All strengths
of salicylic can produce flaking that lasts up to a week. Sometimes solutions
of several acids are used and this can produce brownish dry patches that peel
off in sheets over 7 to 10 days. Please keep in mind these are general guidelines
only and any flaking can be taken care of with a very gentle scrub or an Enzyme
Facial.
I hope this information is helpful for those of you considering a professional
peel but in no way is this a replacement
for a consultation! Chemical peeling is not always appropriate or suitable
for all skin types and this can only be
determined during a consultation. There are many options for improving your
skins appearance and this is just one!
2. What is a Clinical Esthitician?
A clinical esthetician is one of the best-kept secrets of people with really
great skin, right after great genes!
To start, an esthetician is a highly trained professional who has graduated
from an aesthetics school and passed state board exams. They are then issued
a state license to practice the art of skin care. An esthetician is not a
salesperson! He or she studies a curriculum encompassing the physiology/ anatomy
of skin, disinfecting practices and sterile technique. Most importantly estheticians
learn how to perform skin care treatments and their contraindications. Experienced
estheticians are familiar with a variety of techniques, products and cosmetic
lines and stay on top of industry trends.
A clinical esthetician (also called a paramedical esthetician) has taken their
training a step further by working and/or training within the cosmetic dermatology
or plastic surgery field. They are trained to recognize medical conditions
that require a physician, perform hands on treatments and in some cases, assist
in medical procedures such as laser resurfacing and surgical wound care. As
a matter of fact, clinical estheticians and cosmetic dermatologists both work
directly with acne, pigmentation problems, aged skin, scars and stretch marks.
Very few people know that many skin care procedures are routinely performed
by both professionals.
The main difference is approach. The dermatologist examines a cosmetic condition
from a medical viewpoint and often prescribes drug therapy or surgical procedures.
The clinical esthetician performs hands on, non-surgical treatments and uses
biochemically active, non-prescription items to achieve dramatic changes in
clients skin. For example, a client who visits a clinical esthetician
may have the acne lesions physically extracted and then exfoliated with glycolic
acid, receive lifestyle counseling and active home care products to maintain
the results. The same client could also visit a dermatologist, who would probably
prescribe oral/topical antibiotics and monitoring. Both approaches lead to
the desired goal of improving the clients acne condition and often times
clinical estheticians and doctors work together in a complimentary manner.
So now you know one the secrets for great skin!
3. Why Acids Sting and Other Acid Facts.
Most acids will sting or tingle for about 30 seconds after application and
then subside. The degree of reaction depends on the pH of the product, concentration
of the acid and your individual skin type. All acids actually penetrate into
the skin and stimulate sensory receptors at the surface, hence the sensation
of stinging. The degree of stinging depends on the particular acid- glycolic
acid has the smallest molecules and penetrates the deepest so it is felt more.
Comparatively pyruvic is the largest and is hardly felt. Glycolic gives the
best results but has the most sensitivity reactions. A low pH means the acid
is truly acidic whereas a high pH means the acid is neutralized or
alkaline- i.e. less effective and less stinging. Higher concentrations sting
more simply because theres more of the active acid. Sometimes it is
worth the burn literally provided your skin is thick enough to handle it,
and the sensitivity/ stinging subsides. A few precautions can minimize the
discomfort. Use a gentle, bland soap free cleanser like our Rinsing Solution
or Cetaphil for example and a non acidic moisturizing toner. Try applying
the acid mixed with moisturizer so its been diluted a little bit. Always apply
acids and all other active topicals to dry skin. This is because products
applied to damp skin get "pulled" into the dermis deeper
good for moisturizer but not potentially irritating active topical treatments.
A good rule of thumb is to dry after washing and wait 5 minutes. Always wear
sunscreen when using acids- they make your skin more sensitive for up to a
month after use! But in the event the stinging is persistent or the skin is
reddened and inflamed, you should stop. It may be that your skins top layer
is too thin to handle any additional thinning. In this case, you may want
to think about oxygenating therapies instead of acids for improving your skin.
4.
Micellized Vitamins and Nutrients
Micellization is a unique, patented process used to produce water soluble,
microscopic particles, approximately 1/20th the size of a red blood cell.
Imagine your skin as a chain-link fence-- relatively, a drop of oil would
be thesize of a basketball, an emulsified drop would be the size of a baseball,
and a Micellized drop would be like a handful of marbles. Due to their diminutive
size, Micellized ingredients are absorbed 500% more effectively than regular
counterparts. Using Micellized Vitamins and Nutrients topically, as opposed
to taking unmicellized vitamins and nutrients orally, enables more of the
solution to be absorbed by the skin. These topical treatments contain no fragrances,
colors, or other potential irritants, are pure enough to be taken orally and
are extremely effective in treating damaged, dry, acne, photo damaged and
aging skin.
5.EGF: Epidermal Growth Factor
EGF is a long chain of amino acids that possess a powerful growth-stimulating
effect on a wide variety of epidermal and epithelial cells. Although the skin
naturally produces EGF, its production is more pronounced when the skin has
been damaged by a cut, burn, acne, or chemical/laser procedures. EGF has been
concentrated into a topical
solution that can be applied after chemical peels or other procedures in order
to promote healing and shorten recovery time.
I formulated with it from the early 90s until 1998 when reports started
coming out that it is implicated in cancer and hair loss in humans. I have
replaced it with copper peptides which work even more effectively, though
a little slower, and without the health risks . Unfortunately there has been
a big resurgence in 2001 as cosmetic dermatologists and a few cosmetic chains
"discovered " this ingredient. My advice is to be cautious- it does
work but with risk.
6. Heavy Water
Heavy Water is also known as Deuterium Oxide (D2O) and makes up approximately
.015% of the earth's natural water. It has an extra hydrogen atom which gives
it higher melting and boiling points and thus more resistance to vaporization.
Due to this unique chemistry, Heavy Water evaporates slower and hydrates more
intensely than regular water. When sprayed on the skin, this product feels
like regular water but with a "tighter grip" and is ideal for dry
environments like deserts and planes and moisturizing oily/acne skin, Among
its other skin benefits, researchers have found it has a remarkable protective
and preserving effect on tissue because it stabilizes membranes and membranous
structures. It protects against ultraviolet radiation, and prevents fragmentation
of DNA by free radicals. D2O promotes vascular tone, and slows the age-induced
loss of epidermal elasticity.
Heavy water is usually found in assembly factories & production lines
where its used in machinery production and its slightly stale scent isnt
objectionable. When its used for skin care, labs mix in a natural scent hence
the coco nutty fragrance which most love!
7.
Spin Trap
A spin-trap is a type of antioxidant that traps free radicals and neutralizes
them. Free radicals are scavenger molecules created during the cells
oxidation process that are missing an electron. In an effort to achieve stability
it will rip other electrons off neighboring cells, which then become free
radicals themselves and repeat the process.
The analogy of a vampire seems appropriate for explaining this natural biological
occurrence! The presence of a limited number of free radicals is actually
a good thing as they help the bodys immune systems, blood clotting and
vessel dilation. However, when they outnumber non free radical cells, they
become a negative factor. They make the bodys cells more vulnerable
to degenerative diseases by irreversibly damage DNA, lipids, proteins andconnective
tissue, which includes the skin. The human body utilizes natural antioxidants
to fight off the free radicals it produces. Internally these are gluthionine,
super oxide diatmuse, alpha lipoic acid. Internally and externally, the body
uses vitamins A,C and E which donate electrons without becoming free radicals
themselves. They help the body maintain normal non-dangerous levels of free
radicals.
The skin faces external assault as well. In addition to damaging collagen
tissue and inducing melanoma, sun exposure increases free radical production.
Skin infections i.e. acne and our increasingly toxic environment also dramatically
increases their production. Unfortunately only 1 to 5% of our internal antioxidant
intake reaches the skin; they are
utilized for protecting more vital organs such as the brain, liver and heart.
Therefore topically applied antioxidants are the way to target the skin specifically.
As stated before, spin traps work like antioxidants in that they neutralize
free radicals. Naturally occurring spin traps include witch hazel, heavy water
and cranberry extract. Phenyl Butyl Nitrone (PBN for short) is the only effectivesynthetic
spin-trap that is currently available. It literally corrals free radicals
so that new cells and new tissue can
grow unhindered. I am a big fan of PBN for aging and sun stressed skins. This
is one ingredient that is particularly effective but does not stimulate or
exfoliate. Its immediate effect is softening and smoothing the complexion.
I formulate it in an emergency recovery mask after prolonged sun exposure-
great for athletics who train outdoors and frequent flyers. Acne clients really
like it in the Heavy Water spritz while mature clients like it in the Universal
Toner hazel.

Steps in a Pro facial:
A professional facial treatment is an esthetic service performed by a licensed
esthetician (skin care therapist) who has graduated from a beauty school where
he or she learned techniques for maintaining and enhancing skin. Outlined
below are the steps of a general cleansing facial..
Analysis
Your skins current condition is analyzed and reassessed each and every time.
Dehydration, congestion, sun exposure etc is taken into account as well as
any special considerations such as ethnic skin or sensitivities
Cleaning & Steaming
Your skin is cleansed twice with products suited for its condition and then
steamed for 10- 15 minutes. This softens the skin, draws impurities out, dilates
the pores and prepares your skin for the next step.
Exfoliation
Scrubs, acids, botanical extracts or pore dilating solutions are applied to
remove the top clogging layer of skin and to decongest the facial skin. This
makes extractions easier.
Removal of Impurities
This is known as "extraction " work and is the manual removal of
blackheads and whiteheads. Professionally one this does not bruise or scar
the skin. Remember that picking at home can lead to scars and spread the problem
to surrounding skin so also have this done by a properly licensed & experienced
esthetician!
Masks
Facial masks are an important part of a professional skin care treatment.
Some help normalize oil secretions, others are antibacterial and others nourish
the top layer.
Whatever the type, they all help the skin look more refined.
Hydration
The finishing touch to a professional treatment is the application of a light
lotion, cream or moisturizing spritz and an oil- free sunscreen to protect
the fresh layers of skin from dehydration. Results Skin that is clean and
clear right down to the pores and glows! Professional facials help keep the
skin surface smooth, prevent future breakouts and help maintain a beautiful,
healthy complexion.

The Surface Aesthetics Line was developed over 7 years ago
out of the desperate need for a cosmeceutical line I could trust to perform.
I view skincare as an integral part of basic self and health care and I wanted
products that reflected this. Simple and intense without compromising the
skins integrity. Solution oriented treatments for acne, razor bumps, dark
spots, fines lines and aging uneven textures. The resulting formulas are backed
by independent laboratory research and years of successful clinical use on
& by our clientele and a ton of love.
Its been a dream come true to bring them to the larger public. As I
firmly believe skin care is an art and science best dispensed by professionals
in the context of an on going relationship, I make myself available to on-line
clients by phone for in depth consultations and support.
All Products
1) RX Crème
A potent blend of 5% glycolic acid polymers and 10 % organic peroxides that
provides antibacterial properties as well as keratolytc action for both pustular
breakouts and comedonal acne. Also contains milk albumin protein, a natural
solvent to bacterial toxins. 1oz $32
2) Oil Check .2 oz plastic jar.
33 wipes to mop up oil, help regulate sebum and reduce pore size temporarily.
No harsh or drying ingredients so will not cause rebound oiliness. Reduce
for emergency use only. $16
3) Acid Bar for acne and seborrhea.
Incredibly effective, surfactant free bar with a mild sugar base for the face
and body. Sulfur, BHA Acid and botanicals fight the breakouts while honey,
aloe and Vitamin E heal sooth and reduce scarring. Will slightly dry the skin
without "stripping" it. $19
4) Raw Adrenal Gland Tablets $10 100 tabs
A natural and safer alternative to Accutane. There is mounting evidence that
acne and oil production is directly related to stress hormones pumped out
the adrenal cortex-hypothalamus axis. Glandular therapy can give these organs
a chance to recover and in turn, reduce oil production. This approach is considered
hypothetical but anecdotal feedback from clients indicates a 50% average oil
production decrease
5)
CopperConcentrate 1 oz glass bottle.
An
oil-free liquid serum of activated copper peptides. GHK removes damaged skin
collagen and elastin, promotes the synthesis of new collagen/ elastin and
water-binding proteoglycans and glycosoaminoglycans within the skin. Results

Use am/ pm after cleansing or shaving to help skin recover from daily stress
and irritation /inflammation. $56
